WALTERVILLE, Ore. (AP) — A truck transporting 68 head of cattle from Madras to Junction City overturned on Highway 126 in Lane County, injuring and killing numerous animals.

Oregon State Police say the driver sustained minor injuries in Tuesday's crash. The agency says speed was a reason the truck failed to negotiate a corner, and the driver, Daniel Hansford, 37, of Junction City, was cited for failing to drive within his lane.

The owner of the cows responded to the scene and helped troopers decide which animals could be saved.

The trooper assigned to shoot a dozen injured cows told The Register-Guard newspaper ( ) it was heart-wrenching.
