Thanks go out to Bob and Linda Caffee (D6077) for sending along these etiquette tips for passing through Customs:

While waiting in line, turn lights off or just have marker lights on.
When approaching the booth, stop at the stop sign. Do not approach the booth until you are sure the truck before you has cleared. Sometimes the truck will stop and the agents will look in the back of the box. In this case, you must still wait at the stop sign.
If you are a team driver, both of you must be sitting in the front seats when at the stop sign.
Turn on interior lights so both you and your co-driver are visible.
Have paperwork ready to hand to the officer along with your FAST pass, driverís license or passport.
Do not have your radio or CB turned on.
When the lane is clear, pull up until your window is even with, or slightly before, the custom agentís window so they can see across the cab to your co-driver.
Turn off the truck. Do not set the brakes.
Hand the officer your paperwork and your identification.
Smile and be polite and answer all questions honestly. Even if you are having a bad day, keep it to yourself or your day could get worse. The agent has a lot of power and they do not mind using it.
Answer questions YES or NO. Don't volunteer information that doesn't pertain to the question.
When you have cleared, he or she will return your stamped paperwork and your identification.
Be sure to listen to the customs officer for instructions of what to do next.

Do not have your radio or CB turned on.

And, don't be talking on your cell phone either...cell phones have been used by terrorist, to initiate explosive blasts...
Custom's agents get REAL freaky if you are on the phone when you approach the gate...

I can't stand people that have no sense of humor,
so I avoid them (customs nazis) altogether now......

Also make sure you cab looks clean! No nothing on the dash ever! This can also prevent DOT pull overs. We have made it a rule to never put paperwork or anything on our dash but the CB and our GPS pod that has to be on the dash.
And if you get FastPAss it makes things so much nicer, no $5.50 charge at the border coming back! We love it! :p
