Trucker in standoff at Gateway Commerce Center after crashing into facility
EDWARDSVILLE • A man who claims to be armed is in a standoff this morning with authorities at a trucking facility at Gateway Commerce Center after he crashed a flatbed truck into the structure.
A fire resulting from the crash drew firefighters from several departments to the Schneider National trucking facility, but the fire burned itself out.
Authorities said the trucker tried to set fire to all of the computers inside the facility, but sprinklers extinguished those blazes.
Shortly after 2 a.m., emergency dispatchers got a call from a worker at Schneider National, reporting the incident.
Shortly thereafter, dispatchers received a call from the trucker, who said he was armed and would not be taken alive, authorities said.
Gateway Commerce Center is a sprawling warehouse and light-industrial area in west Edwardsville, north of Interstate 270 and west of Interstate 255.
