Please use this thread as needed to vent about frustrations that occur in this biz. They can either be your own fault (ie taking a load to plainview Texas, when in your head Plainview was a suburb of Dallas, but in the real world it is located in an area known as Yaintgettinnodamnloadouttaheredumbazzville, Texas) or some "other" idiots fault.

This one is soley on the shoulders of the dude with that huge Big Gulp cup. I will have plenty of time to stew over my mistake as I deadhead 400 miles to El Paso, sure eatin into the profits on this one, 180 dh miles on the front end and 400 more on the back end of a 900 miler. Not to mention 3 days gone by the time I hit El Paso. Oh wait I did just mention that. On a funny note about an hour before I took this "gem" of a load, I turned down a pretty high paying going to Western Wyoming, because I didn't want to be stuck in a bad area.

On a brighter note, My deposit this week tied for 2nd place on my best week ever, from 2 weeks ago. $5,300. I had a $6,000 week once, I am heading back to the scene of that crime, El Paso. I had a triple up out of there(3 vanloads at one time) 2 to Chicago area and a 3rd near Baltimore. That followed with a good paying load to Colorado.

Any drivers who haven’t checked their brakes in a while might want to do so. The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual Brake Safety Week starts Sunday, Sept. 12.

The campaign runs through Saturday, Sept. 18 and is part of the alliance’s Operation Air Brake program. The program is designed to increase awareness of brakes and brake issues by educating drivers, mechanics and others on the importance of proper brake inspection and maintenance.

That means drivers are likely to see an increased presence of CVSA-certified inspectors during that week talking about brakes. You can find more information about the program here.

The Trucker News Services

8/30/2010

Have you ever been pushed off the highway onto soft shoulders? A driver was approaching Holbrook, NY on I-495 with a load going to Hunts Point. He loaded during the rain that morning and it continued to rain heavy sheets of water through mid-morning. It wasn’t often that this driver would help out with local deliveries, but they were short handed and he thought, "Why not?"

Traffic was terrible. The 4-wheelers were darting in and out of traffic, trying to move up to another spot. Suddenly, to his surprise, the trucks began hitting each other and blocking the interstate.

Our driver went to the inside median, which was the only open route. But the ground was soft from the rain, and his steer axle sunk in the soft mud. The force of the trailer pushed his tractor down and it came over the top.

He was not wearing his seat belt and was thrown to the passenger side of the tractor. As the cab went down in the mud, it was crushed by the trailer. He was trapped in the cab beneath the load.

It took the "jaws of life" nearly two hours to cut him free. He was air lifted to the hospital and, while healthy, will not be returning to work.

There are alternatives for adverse weather conditions:

1. Speed is the first alternative. You can make a lot more adjustments at slower speeds.

2. Following distances must be adjusted when we are in adverse weather. At 55 mph, it takes 250' to stop under normal conditions. The distance doubles when the surface is wet.

3. Develop the "long look" along with your “short look.” With your height above the traffic, practice the "long look," which includes the traffic near and ahead of you.

Bottom line: When it is not your fault, don't be the one who loses. </SPAN>

That's the way I see it.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Pennsylvania State Police placed 198 trucks out of service during a one-day enforcement effort that focused on commercial vehicles traveling on the state’s rural roads and non-interstate highways, Commissioner Frank E. Pawlowski said Monday.

The Commonwealth Rural Roads and State Highways detail, or C.R.A.S.H., was conducted Wednesday, Aug. 25, by state police motor carrier enforcement teams across the state.

“When looking for commercial vehicle violations, monitoring only the interstate highways is not enough,” Pawlowski said. “We are active on rural roads across the state to ensure that commercial vehicles are operated safely.”

The enforcement teams inspected 1,263 commercial vehicles during the detail. In addition to placing vehicles out of service, troopers placed 34 drivers out of service and issued 643 traffic citations and 1,502 written warnings.

Pawlowski said the most common violations were brakes out of adjustment and inoperative exterior lights.

A federal rulemaking to ban text messaging for commercial drivers has cleared another hurdle and could be finalized within a matter of weeks.
 ...

A federal rulemaking to ban text messaging for commercial drivers has cleared another hurdle and could be finalized within a matter of weeks.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s final rule to ban texting while driving for CMV operators was delivered to the White House Office of Management and Budget on Friday, Aug. 27. The move puts the rule a step closer to an already expedited publication date. Officials have set a target publication date of Sept. 17 for the final rule.
Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Transportation issued guidance declaring that texting while driving was already banned under existing regulations. The latest FMCSA rule will put an exclamation point on the issue.
The FMCSA also has an additional rulemaking in the pipeline related to the use of hand-held electronic devices for drivers of commercial vehicles.
A growing number of states have banned or restricted texting while driving for all vehicle operators, and Congress continues to pursue legislation designed to get the remaining states onboard.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has targeted texting and other forms of driver distractions since day one. On Sept. 21, LaHood is scheduled to convene his second summit on distracted driving.
The summit will follow up on last year’s two-day event, which brought together transportation stakeholders, product vendors, safety groups and victims of distracted drivers.
OOIDA plans to attend the summit as a stakeholder, similar to last year. The Association has been active in seeking member input and filing comments on the issue. Truckers generally favor a ban on texting while driving for all vehicle operators, but want the rules to be fair.
Truckers who use smart phones or laptops for directions to a customer, for example, should be able to do so rather than be forced to purchase devices that do not fall under the scope of a ban.
OOIDA has also raised issues about driver privacy as texting bans are enforced. Another issue is whether or not Qualcomm or other devices would be included in a ban or restriction.
