i have been driving a B unit for a fleet owner for several years. he just made me a very attractive offer on the unit i'm driving to become an o/o. i am not, at this time, interested in leasing to anyone. i will continue to work for this f/o and hopefully pick up some additional work out of the memphis area. anyone have any ideas or comments along these lines? i would appreciate any and all.

Bugscuttle-I think if you read the postings just above yours you will get alot of VERY helpful info on being an O/O. I know I thought the articles were quite informative and well written.

To comment and provide the proper information I would need more info from you, like age of the van, who the F/O is leased onto, how will you become an O/O and still work for the F/O.

At this time, I have to say the age of the van is the most important issue. Most carriers require their F/Os to supply new vans every 5 yrs. Your F/O may want to sell the van cause its life is running out.

The next issue would be working under this F/Os fleet. How are you going to do so? Again, most carriers require insurance and everything else how is this arrangement going to work out?

I have to say, although it may sound like a sweet deal, could it be to good to be true??? Be careful, ask a lot of questions and get answers and proof in writing.

You may want to contact some recruiters right here on our boards and ask them a thing or two. Maybe you could place a post in the recruiter forum to get some answers. The recruiters on the site are a great bunch of people and love helping others,

I see things the same way as Teacel. By becoming an owner/op, you are taking some responsibilities away from the fleet owner. As much as it is nice to own your own truck or van, make sure you have all the details that Teacel mentioned worked out. Beyond that, make sure the money is worth it. No matter how proud you will be to own your own, make sure you are properly compensated for the added hasles of being your own boss.

thanks for the comments all. the f/o has one other 0/0 in a B unit that works for him. right now, we are picking up a couple of runs a week @ $1.10 (average 1200 mi/wk). however, i would not be working for him exclusively. i would have the option of picking up other work if need be. the van is a 2000 model E250 with 500,000 miles. these are all highway miles, mostly put on by me. the unit is well maintained (service every 3,000, etc.) . new brakes, rear end, shocks, all new front end parts, fresh xmisn service, 2 new tires. the unit also has a sleeper that i added a few years ago. it is a very comfortable and reliable unit. but, like i said, i do not want to lease on to any company at this time.
