What load board is the best for grabbing your own loads? We want to route a trip to visit family and want to get our own loads if needed to get into the right areas.

Since most expediters are leased to a carrier and have no own authority, there is only one board that I know of. http://www.uship.com

Does Fedex not allow you to get your own load also?

We can bid on loads under their authority if we want.

Yes they do but you have to give them big part of the money. I never did bid for a load so I might be the wrong one for an answer. ;)

getloaded.com is a pay site that usually has some decent paying runs
on it.
if you have your own authority you can get all the money but if not
then fedex takes it's cut when you have to use them to arrange the load
running under their authority.
there are also brokers that won't deal with fedex like landstar.
Most load boards don't have a lot of freight that will fit on a straight
truck either and most pay only a pittance to begin with.

We can get our own loads and actually make 20% more than thru dispatch. Get loaded.com is one we use now, but we are looking for a more real time board. We think we will try Expediteloads.com for the trail period and see if they halp us. Well, after we get done taking in the crops! We are about a third done now, so 2-3 more weeks.

We have used 123loadboard.com now a couple of times. It seems to be good for our needs.
