As lonely as that drive is on Interstate 10 between El Paso and San Antonio, one often thinks of how hard it would be to get help out there if a breakdown occured.
It's known that there's very few repair shops in El Paso that can be trusted, and San Antonio is just too damn far away. What to do???
Fort Stockton, Texas is the home of H&H Truck Repair. Not far from the Comanche Springs Truck Stop on I-10 at exit #257, this is an independent truck repair shop that has built quite a great reputation over the years.
The shop itself may not appear to be anything fancy, but the people there will go to great lengths to make sure their customers are taken care of at a reasonable price, and in a timely manner.
I knew a husband & wife owner-operator team who was headed east on I-10 in Texas a few years ago when they sensed they were having a problem with the clutch in their truck & knew they needed to get it fixed. It was a Friday afternoon & they didn't know where to go until someone referred them to H&H Truck Repair in Fort Stockton.
Once they got there, the mechanic verified the clutch was toast. A replacement clutch was not available locally, so they found one at a dealer in El Paso & made arrangements to have that part put on a Greyhound headed east while the mechanic pulled the transmission out & sent the flywheel out to the machine shop to be resurfaced. He was done with that part of his work by 6:30 P.M.
The drivers spent that friday night at Motel 6 across the street (which is a very clean place to stay- I have been there myself).
Then Saturday morning, the shop owner went & picked up the clutch at the Greyhound station and took it to the shop. About an hour later the machine shop dropped off the resurfaced flywheel & the mechanic had the truck ready to go by 1:00 P.M. They still made it to their destination in Florida with time to spare!
The drivers were VERY HAPPY with their experience at that shop, and they even sent letters to several trucking magazines to tell everyone about it!
I have been to that shop myself years ago to get an alternator replaced, and they did show to be a great bunch to do business with. My part also had to be shipped from El Paso by bus, but they got it done & had me fixed & rolling the next morning! :)
