Well folks... my time in the cargo van has come to an end.
This was the last week I planned on running in the van and now im getting my driver ready to take over before I go to training. It was a good easy week and I got real lucky.
I started out the week with a load picking up at Dana in Lima and going to Charlotte, Nc. I have done this run a thousand times (not really... more like 5) so the perfect way to "retire". I pick up and as usual at Dana, things are running behind. Supposed to be ready at 8.. it wasnt on the truck until 9. But no big deal.. I had gotten plenty of sleep and Charlotte was onlyt 7 hrs away. Appt was 9 Am. PLenty of time, plenty of sleep and I planned on running all night.
But I didnt. I got down to the north side of NC and started feeling tired.. I still had plenty of time it was 4am and I only had about 60 miles left. So I took a snooze for an hr and went on my way again. I got there at 6am and still was tired. The dana down there doesnt start until 7 so I slept until 8 because altho I coulda gotten it off early probably... I was tired.
So I got up at 8 and went in got unloaded called in. Then I went down the road to my favorite truck stop down there-- Charlotte Travel Plaza exit 16B-- good place. They have a grill but I found out its about to be closed and might be replaced by subway. But anywho.. I parked and got some sleep again-- woke up about 1pm. I planned on getting my usual run up to Louisville Ky and then Id go home from there (didnt have a lot to run with) but I was suprised.
It was hot. So I decided to go inside the truckstop to the TV room to keep cool. I called dispatch and joked with the dispatcher a little but he said he didnt have anything yet. I was hoping I didnt have to sit there for three days like last time. Then the phone rings. Its one of the other dispatchers. "Doug I have a load for ya" "Ok". "Picks up at Cheraw SC and goes to Lima". :yikes: Well hell thats just what I needed!!! And i said "well heck-- I think ive heard of that town before" Got a chuckle outta the stone faced dispatcher. So he gave me the load info and I picked it up.
I headed home. It had to be in lima at 5am. It was 6pm now. The backroads were slow moving and I was behind really bad. No time for sleep now. I busted tail and got to Lima at 3. I live about 3 blocks from Ford so I stopped by the house for an hr and a half. I went over to Ford at 4:30 and they said "Receiving doesnt start until 5" I said "I know but by the time I sign in and head back there at the 5 mph speed limit to the other side of the building it'll be 5" He said "we cant let you in the gate until 5". I said ok and started to head out. He asked "Do you know where the Waffle House is?" I said "im not going to go all the way to the Wafflle house to sit for 15 mins Im going to that dirt lot across the street" Apparently its Fords property also so the guard shot back "You cant park there" So I said "ok well Ill go home" But I didnt want to. I went to another lot thats actually a railroad dirt lot and sat there for the 15 mins.
I finally went in at 4:58 and went back there, got unloaded, called in outta service for the last time and went home.
Now I am at home getting the paperwork together to start my driver out. Im also helping a friend that does mortgages do her work for the time IM home. So Im not officially out of expediting but not in it as much as I was.
I wont go away tho-- plan on more "Wolfs Week in reveiw" The 18-wheeler edition
