My two big old days of it.

Well my week didn't start until Wednesday. I got a call at 8:30 pm for a run that picks up at Dana in Lima (about 2 blocks from my house) that picks up at 23:59-- which i knew was midnight and delivers to Charlotte Nc by 11am. They didnt want the time for pick up to be 00:00 which is correct military time :p . So I take my time and head out about 11:45. I get this call which kind of annoys me "Yeah Doug, this is Ken... Just wanted to make sure you are on your way" This annoyed me because im not a kid i dont need to be checked up on... its not like im always late. Ive only been late twice since I started there... I dont need to be checked up on. But oh well Ill deal with it.

I get to Dana and the security guard makes a joke about expediters coming in all at once. He told me I was third cargo van. I said ok.. and he said in a gruff voice "What time were you supposed to be here?" I said 23:59. Went to my truck and pulled by the dock. Went in and told shipping I was there. He said "well you got two trucks ahead of you (looked at watch) and it will be a while" "I know, i was informed by the guard.. just letting you know Im here. KNock on the door when its ready". He said ok.

So I sat in the drivers seat doing some stuff, writing expenses and everything. Then about 12:45 im still sitting there. No one has come out to even talk to the other drivers. So I go in to see whats up. So did the other driver from All Types Expedite. The All types guy is supposed to be in Louisville at 5am. We went in and the shipper told me my stuff wasnt going to be ready until 2:30 and his wasnt going to be ready until 5. I said ok... Ill come back at 2:30-- Ill get some sleep in the truck... knock on the door. Called dispatch and let them know. They arent happy and said he was calling NLM. I said ok but im going to bed. I went to sleep set my alarm for 2:15.

I woke up at 2:15 and went inside. No shipping guy around. I sat there until 2:30. I said ok fine.. I told him to knock on the door-- Ill go back to sleep. Im getting detention. LOL. I went back to sleep. My dispatcher called about 3:30 and said "are you loaded yet?" My half asleep attitude felt like saying "did i call in loaded?" But i was nice-- even half asleep i said "nope-- been sitting here since midnight sleeping. I told him to knock on the door when its ready and he hasnt yet" SHe said "well let me call NLM and see whats up. I said ok-- back to sleep LOL. She called back about 10 minutes later saying "parts just come off the grinder, after packaging and paperwork-- it will be ready in an hr." Ok. back to sleep for a half hr. I finally get loaded and outta there. 5 am!!. 5 hrs to get loaded. I start heading down and NLM changes the time to 3:30pm because of the delay.

Of course now that im behind... NLM is calling every 2 hrs for location. In west va this gets fun when my cell phone has no reception and I stop at a rest area in the pouring rain... ANNNDD!!! have to explain whats going on to the dispatcher. Its cool tho. Ill live.

I get there at 2. I get unloaded and call in. Of course the goofey question of "Are you going to stay in the area" No im gonna dead head all the way home :HMM: . LOL.

So I passed out from 3 until 9 the next morning. Except my dad calling me and friends calling me. So I get a load offer to pick up in Columbia SC and go to Louisville Ky. Once I picked it up I realized Im gonna have some fun. 3449 lbs. I can wing it. LOL.

The hardest thing that happend on the trip was on 26 enterting into NC from SC. There was a very very large mountain. My truck was slowing down-- and I figured why push it... I figured the cruise would accelerate as neccesary. 75... 65....55... 50..40.. something happend. The truck isnt pulling up the hill anymore!!! :yikes: Im slowing down at a great rate of speed with a dump truck coming up behind me. I thought the truck shut off so I popped it into neutrial and turned it back on. SKREECH. Oops shes already running. SO I put it in drive and pick up the pace before the dump truck pushes me up the hill. I guess the cruise shuts off after a certain slow down speed. Nice way to find out lol.

The second thing that happend was in the tunnel on 40 just before going into tennessee one of them semis with the straight pipes turned his jake on inside the tunnel... scared the hell outta me. But I still live.

I made it to the delivery at 9:30 at night. It was supposed to be there at 3:30am. But the dispatcher said get it there asap its hot. So I took it in and when I call in to tell them who signed for it the "new girl" says "you werent supposed to deliver it until 3:30am" I said "Well obviously they didnt tell you about me... when I get a load I get it there early... and take it right in... if its a plant like ford ill wait until my window time.. but not a supplier. I got it here at 9:30 cuz it was quoted to me its hot... I took it in. Im not sitting around until 3:30 am just for NLM. So you can tell NLM i took it in early.. heres who signed for it.. and you have a nice day :D" LOL. I went home after that. Big old two days!!!

When I was at Dana I talked to the all types driver and Ill be calling his company monday for details to switch over. Ill let yall know what happens with that.

And I thought of soemthing because the freight just came off the grinder and was still hot...

Expediters... getting stuff to you thats so important... it cools on its way to you. LOL.

What you guys think? LMAO. To much time on my hands? LOL.

Wolf i'm not gonna tell you how to run your business, but putting that much weight in a van is just plain crazy. If you were involved in an accident and were found to be that overloaded,it surely will not be a good thing. You have to let your company know when these shippers try and put that kind of weight on your vehicle, don't just wing it. :wow:

Not only is this dangerous but it is risking severe damage to the vehicle that you depend on for a paycheck.

I have to agree with sidecar on this one Wolfie...I've cut a few corners BUT overloading my source of income ain't one of them. The company nor customer ain't gonna replace your van and should you get in an accident they'll deny they knew the weight and hang ya out to dry...you could lose everything in a court case. It maybe slow out there for some but this isn't a load you should've taken. NLM shoulda known better they were trying to save some bucks at your expense...That was a sidecar load!! ;)

Well my van on that tag can carry 3,600 it said. So I knew it was getting close.. but it was safe. Plus they cant deny what they put on the bill of lading.

Wolf, i don't believe you are reading that tag correctly. I am thinking that you are driving a 3/4 ton van? If so that means your payload cannot exceed 1500 lbs (somebody correct me if i'm wrong) so that means you were carrying more than twice the amount of weight that you should have.

Its the same formula as you sidecar...gvw minus empty weight = load capacity.

Example my old dodge the GVW was 7700 lbs empty weight was 5200 meaning I could take 2500 lbs.

So Wolf read what the tag says is GVW and then scale empty with a full tank and subtract the difference.

I,ve taken 2900 lbs but the load was over the whole length and balanced and no mountains all pretty flat. It sure ran quiet.
